About the Location
Castle Albrechtsberg has many stories to tell and keeps many secrets hidden deep inside. The area situated directly between the heath land “Dresdner Heide” and the Elbe River is approx. 4 km outside the city center. Castle Albrechtsberg, together with the Lingnerschloss and Castle Eckberg, belongs to the three “Elbe Castles“ on the right bank of the Elbe River in Dresden. The first owner, a nobleman from Scotland, had chosen this area as one of the most beautiful places of his journeys. The palace was a particular popular destination. Celebrities like Wagner, Semper and von Kügelgen made the place famous and attached cultural repute to the castle. In 1850 Prince Albrecht of Prussia, brother of the German emperor Wilhelm I, bought the property and built a castle in Prussian style. Forbidden love led to the construction as the Prussian prince came to Dresden as a magnificent exile for himself and his wife following their marriage which did not fit into the social class. The castle was built between 1850 and 1854 in classical Italian style by Adolf Lohse, a disciple of Schinkel. The park was designed by the likewise Prussian landscape architect Eduard Neide (1818-1883) and encompasses a Roman bath and artificial trick fountains. Today Castle Albrechtsberg with its noble ambience offers an outstanding and breathtaking atmosphere.
Castle Albrechtsberg today belongs to the world heritage area “Dresden Elbe Valley“ appointed by the UNESCO in 2004.
