ABOUT THIS SESSION

Climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing humanity. There is now a strong scientific consensus that human activities are contributing to climate change. Numerical experimentation with climate models has played a major role in arriving at this consensus.

With the inevitability of climate change now being generally accepted, mitigation and adaptation to climate change are rapidly becoming topics of societal interest. Reliable predictions of changes in regional weather and extreme weather events are urgently required. To enable the next generation of climate models to address this, substantial computing resources are required.

These HPC resources have to be supported by powerful data handling capabilities. Climate research involves a vast amount of data, ranging from observations to model outputs. Grid technologies can be used to improve access to the heterogeneous and distributed data archives required for climate research.
