ABOUT THIS SESSION

The automotive industry has changed dramatically over the last 20 years and is faced with a completely new challenge by the global climate change and the need to dramatically reduce fuel consumption. Some of the driving forces behind these developments are globalization, quality, environmental sustainability, safety and product diversification.

Nowadays, car manufacturers need to offer more vehicles and derivatives within their product range, which makes the car development process and the underlying engineering tasks more complex. At the same time car manufacturers have to react to short term legal changes driven by the political reaction to the global climate change.

To keep the development costs under control and to shorten development cycles, virtual methods within the vehicle development process are crucial. The “virtual vehicle” is the key to success and HPC installations are inevitable.

The presentations at the beginning of this Automotive Session will focus on HPC trends in the automotive industry and on the investments car manufacturers have to make into distributed HPC systems to stay internationally competitive. The important thing of this study here is that roughly all HPC installations in the automotive industry are considered, independent of the HPC system manufacturers. It will become clear that high maintenance costs and complex software installations are the HPC challenges global car engineers face.

The Automotive Session will then continue with compute cluster installations in the automotive industry. To be prepared for the future, world-class car manufacturers set up new HPC infrastructures for their IT environments, which have to be cost-efficient, scalable and highly available. In most of the cases the solution is a multi-purpose computational cluster based on commodity hardware.

The presentations in the third part of this Session will deal with the adaptation of applications on computational clusters. Parallel computing on clusters is the most effective paradigm to date. Not only in the early design phase can HPC simulations help optimize the product and reduce costs. In addition, there is an increasing need for multi-disciplinary simulations through code coupling to offer more flexibility and simulation quality for the end user.

After the Automotive Session, attendees will have the opportunity to meet and chat with colleagues, customers, partners, researches and manufacturers in a casual atmosphere at the Exhibition Opening Party.
